I have been cultivating this idea for quite a while now to highlight and encourage more people to think about MOVEMENT as a way of life.
When you really dig through the weeds of health and fitness most people generally want one of 3 things:
1) feel better
2) live longer or
3) optimize their performance.
Some people may say they want to look a certain way or hit a certain strength target, but when you really get down to the brass tacks of things, this tends to be what they are really after at the deepest levels.
So, then we have to ask ourselves, well how do we do this? For me, there are only a handful of evidence informed categories that we act on to truly improve our global wellbeing. This includes having a purpose, financial/ economic security, nutrition, sleep/ recovery, physical, mental, social, and general health.
If we then dig into understanding the physical pillar, we learn that there are four measurable categories of athletic performance that we can act on:strength, power, energy systems, and speed/ agility.
In my mind, each of these categories has a unique weighting of importance based on the activities/ sport that you enjoy doing (i.e. a 70 year old man who enjoys hiking would put more weighting of importance on energy systems and strength then a 22 year old high performance athlete needing speed and power).
But the commonality out of all these is that they require MOVEMENT. Movement is a combination of mobility, stability, and motor control.
The point is that if really want to feel better, live longer, and optimize performance at the top of pyramid, we really need to take care of movement at the bottom of the pyramid as our foundation.
